My name is Pia Berrend, I’m 46, I'm Luxembourgian. Most of the year I live in in the French Vendée where I share an ancient country house with Lola, a rottweiler, Leo, a little terrier-rist, since August 2011 with Lisa, a little French rocket-dog and since October 2011 with Luca, an English setter adopted from Spain.
When I recall the best friends I’ve had so far in my life - from my sweetest childhood until now -they always had four legs. I simply can't imagine my life without animals as part of my family.
In my country, Luxembourg, there are no strays – nor dogs nor cats. I am glad that I can say that animals (except for slaughter of course) are doing well here. They are sometimes kept as pets or even as a kind of status symbol. However – in general, the animals are well here. There are of course exceptions, as with everything and everywhere.
Since age 24, I managed my own different companies until 2005. Since then I'm retired (after I had an accident) and I dedicate all my time, or rather my life, to animals, because not much time remains for anything else.
I do not help in the streets, in the woods, I do not work in a shelter, but every day I sit at my computer, collecting information passing it on, writing to friends, the media, celebrities, mayors, ministers, institutions or organizations, exchanging ideas with other animal rights activists around the globe and considering common strategies. I create connections between people who I think should know each and work together. I am the Vice-President of ESDAW European Society of Dog and Animal Welfare where I work with Eva Johannson, President, and Lotta Isacson, EU and Policy-Coordinator as well as several country-coordinators. Together with Eva Johansson, I have recently founded the organization Occupy for Animals. At a time when the people want to have their revolution, the animals should have theirs, too!
Through my contact with many animal rights activists and due to the many different atrocities of which I learned, I quickly changed my overall view of the lives of our animals in Europe. Especially man's best friend, the dogs in general, today seems to me like they are the living beings most ignored, the most persecuted, most abused, most neglected, most exploited and atrociously treated species in Europe!
My page covers topics from "A" like Animal, "AA" like Animal Abuse, "AB" like Animal Brothel, till "Z" like "Zoo"... my page is still under construction and I am actually wondering if it will be finished one day because it seems that human cruelty is simply endless!
My page shows that the human race is capable of unimaginable atrocities, is capable of incredible achievements led by altruistic compassion. However, the biggest damage the average person will cause, will be to look away and do nothing.
